Moving sheep

The sheep we have in Hereford were constantly getting out of the field so we've moved them to a new spot with hopefully better fencing and a bit more grass. Although we find that there is no grass anywhere in this area. Its much the latest spring I've seen here in 15 years. seems the climate is becoming more unpredictable.

We're hoping for some grass too, the latest spring for the five years we've been here.
To move fields (which are all quite close together, only one involves crossing the road) we have neither animal trailer nor sheepdog and so we put the ram on a dog lead, get someone to stand in the road in case a car or tractor comes by, and walk him over with the rest following, well, like sheep!
The first time, he put tow front feet out and had to be dragged the whole way but now he knows the routine and will even wait patiently while I put the lead on.
That said, I'm envious of your Ifor Williams animal trailer. We borrow one once a year to take our pigs to the abattoir and they're usually of very dubious quality: very generous but does no one round round here have a decent trailer with all the lights working, tread on the tyres and no danger of a rusty bottom depositing our pigs on the road before we get there?

Hi Stuart and Gabrielle
Interesting that you are short of grass, would have thought that much further south that things would be happening by now.

I have to admit that the trailer belongs to a local shepherd and friend of ours. The trailer is actually a Bateson and sits really well on the road, considered by many round here to be better than Ifor Williams, from my part certainly handles well with hardly any rattles during transit.

Well good luck with the season and hope you get some grass soon.
